Outdoor Cinema Summer Season 2017

Enchanted Cinema – Summer Season 2017

Unforgettable evenings of outdoor cinema in Cambridge

As an independent start-up we are over the moon and giddy with love for our city and its growing arts and cinema scene.  It is such a fantastic feeling for us to be part of all this magic and to be at the forefront of merging local music, street food, independent short films, and cinema over the past few years.

We’re brimming with ideas for next Summer Season, and until then we’ll be busy hatching plans to pop up in all kinds of enchanting locations. Watch this space for info about our Winter Season…

Big love from Team EC. Until next time…

Shout outs to all the local and independent musicians & street food vans we’ve worked with this summer ❤️

Leonardo DiCaprio and Carey Mulligan star in Baz Luhrmann’s modern and typically eccentric double-Oscar-winning adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby.  We never thought that a film could do such a classic novel justice, but just as Luhrmann gave a new, modern and refreshing breath of life to Romeo + Juliet, he has created something of a masterpiece from Fitzgerald’s story in this instant classic.

A story full of luxury, debauchery, glitz and glamour. Dickie de Vere and the Dorchester Mavericks couldn’t have been a more perfect fit for the surroundings and nature of the evening.  Much Prosecco was enjoyed and the band who describe themselves as ‘a jolly good vintage’ played a fun and very ‘20s set.

Kura Kura were back serving their delicious Sri Lankan and South Indian curries.  We have loved working with these guys this summer.  It’s great to collaborate with another independent business so passionate about what they do!  We look forward to having Kura Kura feeding Enchanted Cinema goers in the future.

“And I like large parties.  They’re so intimate.  At small parties there isn’t any privacy.”

Cambridge filmmaker Robyn Wilton is selecting the independent short films that we show before each of the features at our events this summer at The Orchards.  We showed One Diving One Falling directed by Harry Cauty before The Great Gatsby.  This gorgeous short reflects on a time when women were considered to have a mental illness for expressing themselves creatively through dance.  This film explores vulnerability, delusion and insanity, combined with passion, artistry and beauty.

One Diving One Falling is a First Acts commission and is one a series of First Acts Short films presented by Screen South and the Ignition Network, in partnership with Random Acts and Arts Council England.  We are super proud to support talented young creatives aged 16-24 who deliver bold expressions of creativity in these 3 minute long short films.  We hope the audience last night enjoyed seeing work from the next generation of artists/filmmakers!

We can’t quite believe that the Enchanted Cinema Summer Season at The Orchard Tea Gardens Grantchester is over.  However we couldn’t have asked for a higher note to end on, or a more lovely audience to share the evening with.  Thank you to everyone who has joined us this summer and who joined us for The Great Gatsby.  We hope we see you again very soon.

Big love from Team EC x

P.S. It’s not all over!  Join us for yet more enchanting cinema at The Biergarten Film Festival next weekend, book your ticket here.

Nobody puts baby in the corner!  This was our 3rd screening of Dirty Dancing on the Enchanted Cinema screen and we’re so certain that there will be many more to come.

We’re even considering squeezing in another event this summer and showing it again for all those who didn’t get a ticket in time…  Watch this space!

As ever, Franck (the chef behind La Maison du Steak) served up some seriously delicious French street food from his van Pull Me Cheri.  Thanks Franck for coming down and feeding so many Enchanted Cinema Goers this summer with your heart-warming food made with some serious love!

Local musician Garance Moonflower played a soulful, jazzy acoustic set before the film.  It was a real pleasure having her back for the first time playing in front of the EC screen since last summer.

Cambridge filmmaker Robyn Wilton is selecting the independent short films that we show before each of the features at our events this summer at The Orchards.  Last night we showed LUX directed by Issy Snailham before Dirty Dancing.  It is a First Acts commission and is one a series of First Acts Short films presented by Screen South and the Ignition Network, in partnership with Random Acts and Arts Council England.  We are super proud to support talented young creatives aged 16-24 who deliver bold expressions of creativity in these 3 minute long short films.  We hope the audience last night enjoyed seeing work from the next generation of artists/filmmakers!

A huge, massive, great big thank you to everyone who joined us this evening for an evening of drinks, popcorn, street food, live music, short film and Dirty Dancing.  We hope you all had the time of your life.  Hope to see you again soon! Big love from Team EC x

Moonlight took this year’s Oscars by storm, nominated for 8 awards and it took home 3. Here are a couple of reviews that we love:

A genre-defying film. Its visual splendour belies its tough, surface-level subject matter, while the performances pull us deep below that surface with their soulful naturalism.” – EMPIRE

“Perhaps the most beautiful thing about Moonlight is its open-endedness, its resistance to easy summary or categorization.” – The NYTimes

Moonlight is a masterpiece for many reasons and we’re over the moon, no pun intended, that so many lovely Cambridge film-lovers agree.  Last night was a sell-out show and many of those who came along were re-watching the film, excited to see it again on the big screen.

The picture is just beautiful, and what a magical backdrop it was to see the story of Moonlight unravel in front of the silhouette of The Orchards’ trees under the stars.

A huge thank you to the wonderful Souvlaki Shack for serving their delicious Cypriot street food.  Brownies, fresh popcorn, drinks from the EC Bar and souvlaki made with all the love – what a fab combination enjoyed alongside live music and great cinema.

At some point, you gotta decide for yourself who you’re going to be. Can’t let nobody make that decision for you.”  Juan

Cambridge filmmaker Robyn Wilton has selected the independent short films that we show before each of the features at our events this summer at The Orchards. Last night it was her moment!  We screened her first film All the Busy Ings which has seen a huge success on going public last month and is already gathering much critical acclaim.

All the Busy Ings is a First Acts commission and is one a series of First Acts Short films presented by Screen South and the Ignition Network, in partnership with Random Acts and Arts Council England.  We are super proud to support talented young creatives aged 16-24 who deliver bold expressions of creativity in these 3 minute long short films.  We hope the audience last night enjoyed seeing work from a wonderful local artist and filmmaker.  We have a definite feeling that very exciting and big things are set to come from Robyn Wilton.  Remember that name!

Another heart-bursting thank you is due to Warren Daniel who played a magical acoustic set before the film.  He has played at many an Enchanted Cinema event and this was his last performance in front of the EC big screen this summer.  We’re already looking forward to having him back next year.  His latest EP has just been released, check it out here.

Thank you so much to everyone who joined us this evening for a magical evening of outdoor cinema under the stars.  You were a magical audience and we hope to see you soon. Big love from Team EC x

Is this possibly the most ‘Cambridge’ film? It was a dream to pair such a fantastic film set in our home town in an iconic Cambridge location.

We had the very lovely ladies of Warm & Toastie serving delicious and belly-warming toasties from their street food van.  What a lovely evening of street food, popcorn, drinks and live music from local musician Warren Daniel.

“There should be no boundaries to human endeavor. We are all different. However bad life may seem, there is always something you can do, and succeed at. While there’s life, there is hope.” Stephen Hawking

Cambridge filmmaker Robyn Wilton is selecting the independent short films that we show before each of the features at our events this summer at The Orchards.  We showed independent short film Cult Party “Kiss (Two)” directed by Patrick Taylor.  It is a short film premiered by NOWNESS and communicates themes of anxiety, frustration and communication through the medium of dance.  We hope everyone enjoyed this fantastic short, it was such a pleasure to screen such a beautiful piece of art before The Theory of Everything.

Thank you to all who joined us for a magical evening of cinema under the stars.  We hope to see you again soon.

Jamie Foxx, Christopher Waltz and Leonardo DiCaprio.  What a cast.  And what a film.  The second Tarantino of the season and it was epic.

We had the lovely Ian of street food van Road Dogs serving his delicious hot dogs before the film and local musician Tom Petie played an oh so soulful acoustic set to the audience cosy in deckchairs in the clearing of The Orchard Tea Gardens.

Beers, hot dogs, live music and Tarantino.  Not a bad way to spend a Thursday on a summer’s evening in Cambridge.

Django: [to Big John Brittle] “I like the way you die, boy.”

Cambridge filmmaker Robyn Wilton is selecting the independent short films that we show before each of the features at our events this summer at The Orchards.  Before Django we showed ‘Pauline’ directed by Fred Rowson.  We hope everyone enjoyed this fantastic short as much as we do.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for an evening of cinema under the stars.  We hope we see again very soon.
