THE BLUES BROTHERS (15)

at The Red Lion, Grantchester

29/05/16

What a way to kick off Enchanted Cinema’s Summer Season 2016!
Team EC spent the day transforming the garden of The Red Lion in Grantchester into a fairy tale
setting. 135 deckchairs were set up, Nemitode lighting installed their mystical fiber-optic
installations in trees, popcorn was popped into vintage stamped bags, lanterns were hung and velvet
curtains were draped over the entrance…
As the day of sunshine drew to a close, a line of eager Enchanted Cinema-goers formed a line, one by one entering the
garden of Enchanted Cinema.
Drinks from The Enchanted Cinema Bar flowed as local musicians set a seriously soulful mood with their rhythm and blues. Popcorn was crunched, food from The Red Lion’s BBQ was ordered and photos were taken. What a turn out!
As the screening grew closer, our audience were settled for a cosy evening under the stars. Sitting back in deckchairs, popcorn and drinks in hand Will and Ellen were as enthusiastic as ever as they introduced their first screening of the year.
Before The Blues Brothers got into full swing, we screened a short film (City Sickness) made by Jonnie Howard, a local talent. Once the music started there was no stopping foot-tapping and humming along, though from the outside that was all you could hear as everyone was locked into the film through our Enchanted Cinema headsets!
A massive thank you goes out to our volunteers, The Red Lion Grantchester, Jonnie Howard for his great short, Nemitode Lighting, our magical musicians and of course every one who came down to share a magical evening of outdoor cinema to the backdrop of Grantchester Meadows.
See you again soon for the next instalment…

HALLOWEEN SCREENINGS

The Red Lion Grantchester & The Cambridge Blue

30/10/15 – 02/11/15

For Enchanted Cinema’s first Halloween Screenings we popped up heated marquees in the gardens of The Red Lion in Grantchester and The Cambridge Blue on Gwydir Street.

Decked out with deckchairs and blankets, our marquees were cosy in the spooky setting created by our team of artists and light installations built by Nemitode Lighting. The winter pub gardens were forgotten as we’d transformed spaces into eerie fairy-tale backdrops for some classics be screened against.

We chose great Cambridge pubs as our venues for these screenings and that meant a great selection of drink. From craft beers and local ciders on tap to fine wines and whiskies, our audience had their drink of choice in hand as they sat back to enjoy the film.

As well as the food from each pub’s menu, Enchanted Cinema had its usual classic cinema treats on offer. At each screening Enchanted Cinema chocolates by chocolatier Hans Schweitzer melted mouths and fresh popcorn was crunched.

First stop was The Red Lion in Grantchester. Situated on the edge of the then misty meadows, we first showed the timeless Ghostbusters followed by the cult classic The Lost Boys, staking an audience into evenings of gleefully ghoulish entertainment. Together with the team at The Red Lion Grantchester we designed a special menu in keeping with the themes of the films and offered service to each deckchair.

The second venue of our Halloween Screenings was The Cambridge Blue, just off Mill Road, in the heart of Cambridge. Though in the centre of the city, The Cambridge Blue’s garden sits (fittingly) adjoined to the Mill Road cemetery and so gravestones and bare branches.

This was the second of our August events. We transformed the garden of The Cambridge Blue into a fairy tale setting for an outdoor screening of Guillermo del Toro’s 3-time Oscar-winning masterpiece, Pan’s Labyrinth.

We pulled back velvet curtains and our audience took to their deckchairs as the tone for the evening was set by the local street performer and musician, Detlev. He performed improvised pieces on his mystical-sounding instrument, the Kotamo. Pints of beer and glasses of wine from the bar were sipped, Enchanted Cinema chocolates by chocolatier Hans Schweitzer melted mouths, fresh popcorn was crunched and food from the The Cambridge Blue’s kitchen was ordered.

The air was tickling with intrigue and excitement as blankets were unfolded, headphones were pulled over ears and lights faded… the screening was about to start.

The sky that evening could not have been more fitting as it gradually changed from pink to blood orange before fading into darkness. The life-sized puppet resembling the Faun (featured in Mexico’s Day of the Dead Parade) which we had hanging from the trees became but a dramatic silhouette!

We joined Ofelia in the old Labyrinth garden and experienced the bewitching adult fairy tale. Under the glow of hanging lanterns and enchanting light installations by Nemitode lighting, together we gasped in awe, horror and admiration at the beautiful unravelling of this classic film.

Thanks to our enchanting audience, the Enchanted Cinema team and the lovely staff and owners of The Cambridge Blue. An unforgettable evening of mystical and enchanting cinema was created in the heart of Cambridge.

A magical summer’s evening was spent by all… in Neverland! This was the first of our two hugely successful evenings of alfresco cinema events in the garden of The Cambridge Blue. We transformed the space into a fairy tale setting for an outdoor screening of the Steven Spielberg classic, Hook.

This family-friendly event saw an audience of all ages share an evening under blankets, the glow of hanging lanterns and enchanting light installations by Nemitode lighting. There was live music before the screening. As we pulled back velvet curtains and the audience took to their deckchairs, the mood was set by the lovely Warren Daniels, a local musician and busker, with his spellbinding sound.

As bubbles floated through the air, pints of beer and glasses of wine from the bar were sipped. Enchanted Cinema chocolates by chocolatier Hans Schweitzer melted mouths, fresh popcorn was crunched and food from The Cambridge Blue’s kitchen was ordered.

The rest of the evening unfolded in a hum of Enchanted Cinema excitement as we were transported with Robin Williams to Neverland. We spent an evening in the company of the lost boys, Tinker bell (Julia Roberts) and Captain Hook (Dustin Hoffman). Laughs were had, tears were shed and when the film ended silence was broken by a beautiful eruption of applause. As headphones were taken off, an atmosphere of shared cinematic pleasure was felt by all.

Thanks to the Enchanted Cinema team, the lovely staff and owners of The Cambridge Blue and our enchanting audience. A magical, memorable and enchanting evening of outdoor cinema was created in the heart of Cambridge.
