Past Event: PRETTY WOMAN (15) The Gonville Hotel 10/9/16

What a wonderful evening we had. It was another sell-out event and a beautiful summer’s evening. So many smiling faces. It was especially lovely to see some familiar faces of Enchanted Cinema goers who’d been to events earlier in the summer.

Classics like Pretty Woman are all about the nostalgia and there was a real atmosphere of reverie that evening as we all laughed at the iconic moments we’d not seen on the big screen for years. To watch the romance unfold under starry skies, was something really magical and it always feels just that bit more special when it’s in a clearing of the best kept secret garden in Cambridge!

One thing’s for sure, we’ll be showing this classic again on the Enchanted Cinema screen, it’s  just too great a nostalgic journey not to play again. Some films will never get old, or less magical.

SEPTEMBER, 2016

The Gonville Hotel
Cambridge

The tickets sold so fast that we had to add an extra date which was the first time we had experienced this wonderful thing at Enchanted Cinema. Cambridge really does love Grease, and of course, so do we.

Sian, a wonderful woman in Team EC, loves to dress up and took it on herself to dress as Sandy. She handed out headsets to the audiences and everyone seemed as excited as her. It was really lovely to see so many friends catching up over popcorn and Prosecco before the film and singing their way through the rest of the evening under the stars.

The Gonville Hotel Cambridge served their street food/drive-in style menu both evenings, so sliders of burgers were enjoyed diner style alongside the wine and soft drinks from our bar where Jack, our Popcorn Prince was having the time of his life quoting the film as he served.

We think Grease always needs repeating, as it really does never grow old. What a fantastic musical classic. There are so many great lines we had to choose from to paint onto our sign for the nights, but ‘tell me about it, stud’ made the cut. Which one shall we choose for the next time?

Past event: GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY (12)

At The Gonville Hotel

21/8/2016

This event was fun. Since its release in 2014 Guardians of the Galaxy has fast become a modern Marvel cult classic. Chris Pratt stars as Peter Quill, soon to become the legendary Star Lord as he  travels the galaxies with a group of intergalactic criminals to the soundtrack of 70s classics.

This is a film both serious in its commitment to honouring the Marvel comics from which it came and ridiculous in how silly it is. Full of fun and music that is impossible not to sing aloud to (especially easy to do when you’re wearing headsets), Guardians of the Galaxy is the kind of film that makes everything feel very quiet when it finishes.

We all enjoyed burger sliders made by the lovely chefs of The Gonville Hotel and many many pinstriped pink and white Enchanted Cinema-stamped bags were filled with freshly-popped popcorn. Guardians of the Galaxy is one of Will’s all time favourite films and so he was particularly happy this night to be surrounded by so many lovely Cambridge GOTG fans.

We’ve got a feeling this film will be back on our big screen very soon.

Dirty Dancing is possibly the most iconic romantic dance film of all time. We have never heard so many conversations involving so many quotes, namely ‘nobody puts baby in the corner!’.

Some knew every word of the film, line-for-line and others watched the classic for the first time. For both first-timers and those who were watching Dirty Dancing for the hundredth time, everyone shared a wonderful evening of outdoor cinema.

Drinks flowed, popcorn was popped and crunched as the sun set. We particularly appreciated the group of very lovely women who brought along watermelons. Thank you for making all of our nights that bit more colourful!

Patrick (Swayze) & Prosecco, Patrick and Pimm’s, Patrick and popcorn became popular orders at the bar. We’re sure this will catch on. And we’re also sure that the next time Dirty Dancing is on our big screen the Patrick menu with make a comeback.

The Gonville Hotel
Cambridge

We do love a good pair up of a perfect film in a perfect setting. The secret garden of The Gonville Hotel in the heart of Cambridge has been a beautiful location for many evenings of magical outdoor cinema already, but this evening did feel particularly special.

Scott Fitzgerald’s classic novel is a story of worlds colliding, marrying and contrasting, a story sprinkled in sparkle and grandeur. With Parker’s Piece, traffic, beeping horns and business just on the other side of the towering trees behind the screen, the beauty and tranquility of The Gonville’s garden had a serendipitous atmosphere of escapism into a dream for the night. Much like Gatsby’s parties.

Prosecco, Champagne (and beer and ciders), rose bushes, blossom trees, the grand private suite of the hotel the backdrop to The Enchanted Cinema Bar, it all felt very beautifully curated, as though the garden was made for us all to be watching The Great Gatsby there!

Leonardo DiCaprio and Carey Mulligan star in Baz Luhrmann’s modern and typically eccentric double-Oscar-winning adaptation of this classic tale and the whole evening was a wonderful journey through art and fine storytelling by one of our favourite directors.

“In his blue gardens men and girls came and went like moths among the whisperings and the champagne and the stars.”
― F. Scott Fitzgerald, The Great Gatsby
